????????????

Talking tolerance from a distance in one thing. But on the road, game four of the conference final, you walk back to your lockerroom after a game about to shower and what is the first thought that enters your mind? How you could have won the game or to get in the shower first?

Who cares if they are gay? Unless they missed the game winner... then you call them whatever slurs are most offensive.

The thing is if your playing on a basketball team there really should only be one thing on your mind, winning, but we all know now days thats obviously not whats going so with the whole gay teammate thing i think it would affect opposite team more than it would the team that he is on. I say this because anyone whose ever been involved in team sport where there isnt alot of guys on the team and everyone knows everyone pretty good, your teammates are like your friends. The only way i could have a problem with it would be if he tried sexually approach or talk to another teammate. Then obviously there are some issues. But if that doesnt happen then i think i would say let him be who he wants to be and focus on the game. What ever it takes to win

I am going to take a stab at this and wait for the ridicule. I am gay. I am white. I played basketball in highschool and was recruited to play div III college, but decided to go to a bigger school that had the major I wanted. I played intramural hoops and had a blast. A few people knew I was gay, and NO ONE cared, at least not to my face.

I have heard the shower room argument so many times that it puts me to sleep. For those of you who really think this, get over yourselves. Any athlete knows the unwritten shower/locker room code 1) don't look at anyone else who is naked or getting naked 2) don't get too close to someone dressing and 3) NEVER, NEVER make eye contact while showering!!!!

Ok, those are the conventions, respected by everyone, including gay athletes. If you guys can't get past the fact that as a white, gay BB player, I could take the rock from you, hit a 3, and even dunk at 5'11" then TOO BAD!!!!!

When I played ball, it was about the sport, not anything else.

By the way, knee and back injuries caused me to have to "retire" from hoops. Now I am a competitive powerlifter who regularly places in regional lifting competitions. I also have a third degree brown belt in Judo. Anyone want to give me smack about being gay???

He is gay. So what. Just be in his shoes. He is surrounded by Straight guys who possibly wants to beat him up because of his sexuality. This is silly right? What you have is homophobia. Why do you feel like this? Do you think he has a crush on you? Just because he is gay doesn't mean he will be chasing after every man he sees. Do you chase after every women you see? If he does say he likes you or if he starts to sexually harass you, then talk to your coach because sexual harassment is sexual harassment rgardless of their gender and sexual orientation. But you should not assume all gays are like that. Please watch movies like, "Milk", "Boys don't Cry" etc. Remember, Homophobia is very lame. Cheers!

Coming out in public on a sports team could lead to some awkward problems...most likely in the present you would get beat up if you mentioned that you were gay. If you were macho enough you could hide the truth very easily since most guys in the sporting world have that "male bonding" going on. There are some sports that would accept it....tennis,bowling,gymnastics,figure skating...but football, basketball that is a tough decision...now back on your question...I would accept my teammate's decision...that is his decision and I am not one to judge. To each their own.
