I know that some apps and downloads only work with one or the other, but is the performance different? Which is better?

Nowadays it's basically a question of preference. There are some sites that only work in IE, but those are few and far between. Just copy-paste the web address into IE when you come across one. Firefox is the most customizable of the major browsers with its 'extensions'. Opera is the most full-featured from the get-go and what I would recommend for anyone who doesn't want to spend days sorting through extensions. It also has the cleanest interface. IE7 is okay but it's still a security nightmare and isn't even as good as the others from a features standpoint.

Some swear by firefox, I still like IE best. The problem with IE is that because its the number one browser, its the number 1 target for malware! Mine runs just fine! Aint nothin to keepin it clean when you know whats what! If you download freeware, you will get malware! If you are smart enough to read the contracts to the full extent, you will find that most freeware will tell you its gonna put some 3rd party software on your PC! There are very few freeware programs that dont at least put spyware on your PC. Dont get me wrong, I made every mistake others make! I have just been on the net since it started and learned the hard way! By the way, netscape is NOT firefox!

They're different in features.

I always avoided Internet Explorer (IE) because it wasn't as good as Netscape (which is now FireFox), and the security on IE was so miserable, it was like asking for a virus.

IE 7 is actually quite good now (as is FireFox), so it's really which features you like. IE will run ActiveX, so that's an advantage, or a danger, depending on your point of view.

I always run FireFox now, and only use IE when I have to (if something won't run under FireFox).

Depends on the situation, since they all have their own little differences. I run three IE7, Firefox and Opera and I love them all since they have different features that are fun and useful.

I've found that I get better performance from Firefox & it has tools that I want to use, not what some cubicle gnome in redmond thinks I want.

Neither work well!
Opera is the only browser that has been for years 100% DOM compliant. From a designers point of view, if it works in Opera it will work in anything, simply because Opera does not tolerate bad code.
