The big ones are Sprint & T-Mobile. Their networks and investments in hardware, software, transmitters, and infrastructure make them a reliable choice. Each operator has their own marketing style to attract customers to join them. The phones are cheap when you get a contract because the operators usually get special pricing from the phone suppliers for their network to carry exclusively, or put their brannding on the phone. The phone manufacturer gets his phones advertised through the operator's marketing network, and the operator gets marketed from the phone provider's website. The operators usually recoup their cheap phones with the length of contract and the monthly tarriff you sign up for.
