Mitosis would not begin. If an organism had 10 chromosomes in its cells and this happened and mitosis began the first step would have the chromosomes line up along the center of the cell. from here on a multitude of thing could happen; one being an unequal distribution of the chromosomes to each side of the cell upon the completion of anaphase. If cells did move ahead through telophase they would be useless since they did not have the correct chromosome number as the original cell.

The two daughter cells could not be just the same as the original cell was.

When the DNA replicates, it makes those double-stranded chromosomes that will be pulled apart in mitosis. Without doubling, even if the rest of the process went on, there wouldn't be any sister chromatids to pull to opposite poles. So maybe the spindle would still pull chromosomes to the poles, but the new nuclei sure wouldn't turn out to be even.

Good thing this doesn't happen! No way to tell just what would happen!

this do happens sometimes...it then causes the various genetic diseases due 2 either loss of a chromosome or due to addition of a an extra chromosome
