When people ask me what I want to be for a living, and I say hiv/aids specialist, they laugh and ask if i have hiv..I dont understand.is this a funny career choice? AIDS has always, for me,been one of those diseases that has blown me away and held my interest since forever. I know people who are dying of AIDS and the fact that I want to be involoved and try to do something for the cause shouldn't be funny.so,why do they laugh????

Ignore them when they laugh. That is horrible. You go out and help people. Some peopel laugh and some do not. I do not. I sort of know what you mean. I want to teach english as a second language to children in the middle east. I get laughed at for wanting to involve myself there?

Why do people laugh? Are these PEOPLE not HUMAN?

This is one of those questions where I think people in this society are brainwashed to strive to the "cheese" at the end of the rat race - but what is the cheese? There is no cheese.

Listen - I wish you the best of luck to pursue this. Be safe and follow your dreams. Take Care.

You should be commended for it. Though they may react like that because Aids is a scary thing that many people probably just hope they can stay miles away from (not in terms of rudeness to the infected, just out of instinct over the disease itself). Also sometimes people give the wrong reaction when they don't know how to respond to something so serious.

They laugh because they are uneducated and entirely uninformed...therefore it frightens them. They don't have compassion for people with AIDS because they still think that only gay men & drug users can contract it. These are people who are so judgmental that they think drug users and gay men deserve the horrible virus. Don’t let them get to you. Just remember they are ignorant wan people are afraid of what they don't really understand. Good for you for following you passion, and just imagine how much more valuable you are then the judgmental idiot's that would laugh at such a serious matter.

i don't know why they laugh...maybe because it sounds like you want to be an expert in having it or something.

i mean, it's not really specific. for example, do you want to be a "specialist" in the medical arena? or...for counciling? or....you want to know everything you possibly can about the disease? maybe if you try being more specific such as, "i would like to be an HIV/AIDS medical researcher" or "i would like to council those who have been infected by HIV/AIDS"

Because they are a: shallow, b: ignorant, or c: uncomfortable. I think it is a wonderful career choice. People laugh about a lot of stupid things, and unfortunately health issues seem to be one of them.

But good for you!

Maybe because it's very specific. They don't laugh at the cause I'm sure.

They laugh because it's like you saying that you want to be a Brazilian literature professor...it's very specific and can seem "out of nowhere".

Probably because they don't have any feelings for people with aids. They don't think this could ever happen to them. I'm proud of you for wanting to do this. Good luck.

It could be a nervous reaction. People usually make fun of what they don't understand. Don't let anyone discourage you. You want to do something good. I think everyone should be glad that there are people like you who want to do good in this world.
Hooray for you!!!

It's not funny to me. I think it's sweet you want to help people.

Why would people laugh at that? People can be soooo rude, no?
