Because most people are, by natural law, average. Our society puts an empathsis on only the exceptional people getting the big reward. Therefore people are confused and frustrated by the reality that their purpose is to just to make a living. Try to make ends meet turns out to be the purpose.
The confusion lightens up when a person realizes that life is short and living as close to moment brings the most satisfaction. Or sometimes a person thinks that the ultimate purpose is to really get heavily involved with religion.

Most people don't have a clue what our purpose is. I think I am here to make the world a better place by being as kind and helpful as I can. Allot of people are very happy to pull the rug out from under you, burst your bubble, kick you when you are down and slander your name, no matter how nice or kind you are so I can say I keep getting back up again. And I do what I think in my heart is the best thing to do.

Unfortunately, life does not come with a users manual. Also, tech support is notoriously hard to reach. And even though the system has been designed for billions of years, it is still kind of faulty.
So you can't really blame people. It's really complex, too.

Some people were raised with the idea of self-esteem being more important than achievement, which has caused them to place the self above all else. Such beliefs also have created a generation of young people who believe every dream is attainable but who aren't prepared to deal with discovering it isn't so.

Maybe they haven't made up their minds because they are too young. They are gathering experience along the way, even if they don't know it. Everything you go through has a way of working itself out in your mind. It takes time to know onesself.
