I used to hire employees for a convenience store. For the types of jobs you will be applying for at 17, the main thing is to present yourself in the most positive light you can. Wear a clean pressed button-down shirt or a polo shirt TUCKED IN. No tee shirts with logos. If you are wearing jeans, be sure they are the boring kind with no holes, worn out spots or emblems. No falling-off-your-fanny pants. Wear your good shoes and be sure they are clean. Fill out the job ap in pen, and as neatly as possible. Even if you are going in to a fast food place to apply, and you know everyone there, do not make jokes or act too familiar. A smile, a handshake and appropriate eye contact go a long way to set you apart from the crowd. Be sure to thank the interviewer for their time. If you really want the job and haven't heard back after a few days, it can't hurt to drop off a brief thank you note. It only needs to be a few lines long, just say how much you appreciated the person taking time to interview you, then state why you feel you would be a good person for the job they have.

Good luck!

-first of all, MAKE SURE YOU FILL OUT YOUR APPLICATIONS COMPLETELY! do not leave blank spaces, if you don't have an answer to a question, simply put "N/A"
-make sure you thoroughly and completely go over all the things you are and aren't supposed to fill out on the application
-make sure you write neatly and clearly
-most places prefer that you write in blue or black ink
-if your going for a job in fast food, or somewhere else where minimum wage is the norm, write a reasonable amount for your expected hourly pay, no one's going to hire you if you're going for your very first job and you're expecting to make$10-$15 an hour
-if you get an interview, present yourself as an intelligent person, and have very clear answers. say it like you mean it.
-and it's always good to smile and give a nice, firm handshake to your interviewer (before and after the interview), that always gives a good impression, try to even throw in some small talk or a joke or two, if the questions you're being asked permits it
-always be polite and say please and thank you
-last of all, BE CONFIDENT, if you're not, fake like you are!

good luck! =)

I'm guessing that you are still in high school, so you will have to find a job that will work around your schedule. This is why so many teens work fast food and discount stores. Even if your typing skills are top of the line, don't expect to find a job as a secretary since you are in school most of the business hours. Take any job you can get, do a great job, and better jobs will come to you.

Dress to impress. Wear business attire to interviews.
Arrive on time.
Arrive ALONE; don't take friends along with you.
Completely fill out applications. Neatness and spelling counts!
Answer interview questions with complete sentences.
Don't use slang.
Sit up straight.
Look the interviewer in the eye and speak in a voice that can be heard.
Good luck.
