Generally, it takes 4 years for an undergraduate degree, but some programs are 5 years (I believe architecture at Va. Tech for one). Biology which will likely be your major is usually a four year degree.

Advice: Take as many AP classes in high school as you can (esp. Biology and Chemistry). Many colleges will give you credit for these classes - thereby reducing the required number of classes. Pick out colleges now that have a strong biology/genetics department. Contact the colleges that you hope to attend and find out now what their requirements are and what classes they will accept for credit.

If money is an issue, go to a local community college first and transfer to a better accredited institution for the last two years to get your degree. Be prepared to continue on for your doctorate degree though.

It takes 4 years if you don't mess up or fail anything. Many people take 4.5 or 5 years to complete an undergraduate degree. In high school, should take as many science and math courses you can so you will be better prepared for college. To do the really cool stuff, you will need a doctorate degree. An undergrad degree will get you a job as a lab technician.

Rosa,

GOOD for you!!!!!!!!! That was my goal when I was in high school too!

When you apply for colleges, your major will be biology, with an emphasis on genetics.

Make sure your high school biology, chemistry and math are strong. Take the ACT for Biology as well as the SATs.

Cedar Crest College in Pennsylvania offers a major in Genetic Engineering.

Once you get accepted to the university of your choice (it must be a 4 year university) talk to your advisor about the classes you need for this career goal.

Apply now for internships at biotech or pharmaceutical companies. Do that every summer that you can, until you graduate from college.

If you need any more info, feel free to email me.

Focus on the sciences, biology in particular, when you go to College.
Try to get into a college with a strong biology program (I believe Cornell has one, could be wrong).
It'll take 3-4 years depending on your curriculum in high school, most likely 4.

After that, you may need to attend graduate school.
