The motor mount holds the engine in place, and keeps it from twisting around when you step on the gas. Had it completely broken, you'd be looking for a second job to cover the repair of the damages to the body, hood, frame, transmission and driveline.

a motor mount is really an engine mount . anyway that is the point where the engine is fixed to the frame or at least the mount is attached to the frame. the mount is part steel and part rubber . the steel of coarse can rust as can the frame so sometime that can break . the rubber can be damaged too the rubber is there to reduce vibration and provide some cushion for the engine as the car goes bumping along the road.
the price of a engine mount is not great its a simple part .
the price of having it put in is the factor. this requires that the engine be lifted up so a new one can be put in and this might mean the engine has to come out. in order to get room to do all this repair work.
i suggest you find out what engine mount it was meaning the location of it . then phone around to different shops and get some prices for the job .
you may learn that the car is rusted to badly or it can be not too bad and this is just a small problem . the next shop you take it too ask them to show you the mount when the car is up on the hoist this will give you a good understanding of the condition of your car and then you can figure out if you want it fixed.

motor mounts hold your motor in your car, without them you can't drive, NO engine...if nothing is holding the engine in, what do you think happens ???
They break due to wear, cold, rust, age...or sometimes the engines will move too much and crack their mounts..
You either buy a new car or get the mounts redone...and do all 4, just because they only found or saw -1-, doesn't mean the others aren't cracked or won't be in a short while.

I agree with the above answers. Here is some more info. On a front wheel drive car, if the mount is broken, it allows the engine to move considerably and will damage the CV joints. If it is a rear wheel drive car, it can damage the torque converter or in a manual shift prematurly wear out the clutch.

The motor mount is just what it sounds like. It's what holds the engine in the car. The good news is that there is more than one holding it in. The bad news is, you should really have it repaired.

Motor mounts hold the engine in place and absorb the engine vibrations. They become defective usually because of old age because they take a beating from the vibrations of the engine. (Sometimes, they're defective from the factory, in which case you would know right away.) You should replace them if they're broken. If one of them is broken, your car will vibrate like crazy and be loud when you accelerate.

Motor mounts are semi-flexible couplings that attach an engine block to the car's frame. They serve to reduce the vibration of the engine that gets coupled to the rest of the car. They can fail, and replacement is a nuisance as one has to at least partially lift out the engine to do so.

The motor mount basically keeps the engine and all the parts connected to the chassis, and keeps them aligned.
Had it broken the motor would likely have pulled itself a part.
