For the most part I agree with what Owlish Fox has said.

I hear people say all the time "I believe everything happens for the best" and while it is a lovely sentiment, I believe that some things just happen. IMO, to say EVERYTHING happens for a reason would imply that God (or some other omnipotent being) is a big puppeteer, guiding and directing EVERY thought and decision made by every person. I believe he gave us free agency to think and act for ourselves and not to be acted upon. That having been said, I do believe that with sincere prayer, God can, and does from time to time, intervene on our behalf.

Further, I believe there are many things that we learn from the 'missed' opportunities, just as much as from those opportunities realized. If God were always there to "catch us" as it were, we wouldn't learn much.

For some events yes, for others, no. For example, I believe that I am married to my soul mate. We met because he was friends with my college roommate. If circumstances had prevented me from having that person as my roommate, I believe the universe would have presented another opportunity to bring my husband and me together - a party, a class we both attended, etc.

But sometimes, you only get one chance - if at a crossroads you turn left, there is one set of outcomes, if you choose to turn right, a completly different set of outcomes awaits.

In summary, I believe certain parts of our lives are predestined - particularly major things like life partners, but many of the little day-to day details are choices we make and they can add up to a productive life or a real waste.

Um...no. I know that there are critical choices that you have throughout your life, but you cannot always go back to correct them. And yes those moments are painful...but as humans, we learn from those experiences and move on hopefully. We should learn from our mistakes...always. And even better, learn from the mistakes of others. That is why history is so important to learn. ; )

Would that it were true.

But, regrettably, no. I figure I only have one shot at this thing called life. Best make the best of it.

None of us are getting out alive.
