I keep a lot of sensitive files on an external harddrive, but I don't want to have to lock the thing up every time I'm not using it. How can I select who can have access to it and who can't?

Specifics:
Western Digital My Book Essential Edition
Model: WD1600

You may want to get a password protection program to secure your sensitive files. A good one is DataViz's Passwords Plus for about $30. You can find it at CDW.com or use Yahoo! Shopping to find the lowest price.
