I looked vampires up on wikipedia. It mentions vampires and counting but not why.

The absolute BEST book I've ever read on the subject of Vampires, and the history of the vampire folklore, is called "Vampires, Burial, and Death" by Paul Barber. It explains all of that. Read it--it's SO interesting!

I have heard of the problem but I do not have a correct and provable explanation yet. Although I have a few theories:

1. Perhaps these little things remember them to their eternal suffering from bloodlust. The number of days, weeks, years they spent in suffering...

2. Perhaps someone cursed them to count these things because they were so brutal and predatory animal, that they did not count the number of their victims, so each and every vampire must think of it how much lives did he took over the years.

3. It is just a fairy tale. I mean the church or the folks created these superstitions about vampires to make them easier to deal with. This is why vampires are afraid of sunlight and garlic.

4. They wanted to reach the eternal knowledge through vampirism, since they live forever. And this ancient desire for knowledge forces them to KNOW the number of these things.

I hope I could help.

as you know a vampires lifespan is eternity. To count the grains of sand or rice is the vampires method of affirmity of the years of his/her toll.If there were no grains of sand or no rice or pebbles to count ,the vampire would know that it was the end of eternity and therefore evaporate into nothingness.

They have a form of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)apparently according to old folklore. They are killers with a need for order in thier immortal lives. Chaos disturbes their habits. I'm not weird or anything just have a Cajun aunt that used to tell us those stories when we were little.

The reason is because they are going to live forever so they count everything because they can count the days of their lives but they dont need to. You understand.
