I was in one (AOII). My experience might be vastly different from other women in one, though, considering there were only about a hundred and 50 women TOTAL in the school I was at (it was an aviation school of a bigger university). I don't think most of us were what most would call the "typical" sorority types.... we were all pilot and engineer majors and a bit tomboyish. lol
Sometimes I think the sorority was begun on campus just to the girls won't feel so out numbered (1000 guys to 150 women) and have a chance to be somewhat "girly".
I enjoyed pledging. We did a bunch of goofy/fun stuff from a treasure hunt that spanned half the city of St. Louis to picking up alums at the airport - to being the beer girls at the local dive (yes, this place was a dive lol).... or "told" to make snow angels (hence this screen name).
I did find some of the meetings and ritual stuff a bit tedious after a few years. It was still fun to have "sisters" all over the country. I'm happy to say everyone I've met were pretty nice.
I'm glad I was in one at a small school. They sure pay a lot to live in those huge sorority houses. I'd never be able to afford it.

I was in a small school sorority, and it was great! It was more like a social club, really.
Honestly, I think sororities are fun. They can get crazy, but that's why you have rush week and pick your own sorority. There's no horror story of being inducted or anything, and it can be costly.
In the end it comes down to this: do you like being around other girls whom will be your friends for 4 years?
If you do, great! Go for it! Have fun! Be prepared for late nights of giggling and lots of fun!
If you don't, you'll have fun too! College is FUN on it's own, and if you don't want the stress of a sorority, don't worry.

There are a lot of great sororities out there so you should do some research to find out which one is best for you. Sororities help you make contacts with women that could be useful in your future career. It is also just a great place to meet friends at a new school.

Sure! If you can't get friends any other way and miss the exclusionary feel that those old cliques in High School had to offer. Oh, and mommy and daddy don't mind paying the outrageous fees. *rolls eyes*
Even the 'best' sororities have terrible hazing techniques. One of the most respectable ones at our University made all of their pledges get Brazilian waxes to prove their devotion. Now isn't that nice?

If you want too, but personally I think that they are just a FAD!! People are joining them for the wrong reasons, but if you are up for the initiation process then I don't see why not!
