It depends on the kind of sport you are in. There are some sports which require publicity and not individual sportsmen.
For example, hockey, which was virtually a dead sport in India inspite of being the so-called national game, has found a new lease of life with the start of the professional hockey league (PHL).
On the other hand, sportsmen like Roger Federer are world famous -minus USA. And he doesnt need more publicity. However he is unknown in the US-why? because they stick to their baseball and NFL stars. It is the public's loss that they dont get to know about Federer.
On the other hand, there is the extreme case of over-publicity-case in point being Team India in cricket and Sania Mirza in tennis. Padma Shree at 18, and what is her credit?-one title at Hyderabad-which was a lower league tournament in the WTA circuit. She is in line with the likes of Rahul Dravid who has scored 9000 runs in Tests and 10000 runs in ODIs.
Where is she in the world rankings ? #45.
But most people wont agree because she is a woman tennis player, who we have not had for a long time, besides other attributes that i dont even want to bring up.

no they dont require it but if a player plays well he/she will get a lot of attention from the media whether they want it or not. a lot of pros dont like all the publicity but some love it. for tennis though, i think some players are always looking for a little more exposure because they want to lure more people into the sport. tennis is almost like a lost art in the sports world when you have huge franchises in basketball, football, baseball, soccer, etc... all over the world.

I don't think that sportsman require publicity because if they play well then automatically they will get a good name and fame.
If they require publicity to play they should be called as a SOCIAL LIABILITY

yes.... they perform and nothing is as satisfactory for a sportsman as a pat on the back and publicity as a Great performer...
yes.... they don't need unwarranted publicity of their personal life/affair as media use to do to just make money .... this makes a priceless performer's life cheap.....
