What supports the arch? Muscles and ligaments. Do what SuperMer said. The exersise with a towel is great. Also, do the exersise when you do this: point your foot, then flex it starting at the arch and continuing with your toes. Then point it again starting from the middle section and finishing with your toes. It is like making the waves with your foot. Also, buy yourself special insoles with the arch support. No, farmacy won't carry them. Whatever they have is not good enough. You will have to go to a place that makes orthtopedic stuff. Contrary to popular belief, those arch supports are not there to just reduce the discomfort especially if you don't have any, but to "teach" your feet better habits. Once your muscles learn to support the arch properly it will be in much better shape. You can't really fix it because the ligaments that support the arch have already stretched and you can't undo it. But if your feet are strong this is what will provide the arch support.

'Flat Feet' generally refers to a low or dropped transverse arch in the foot. This arch is maintained by interlocked bones in the foot (Talus, Cuboid and Navicular - not able to correct w/o surgery) strong ligaments (unstrengthenable) and some muscles via their tendons during activity (can develop strength (muscles) but limited).

Be very carefull when accepting advice that includes using inserts and other 'arch helpers'. These devices are designed to mechanically hold your arch or lack thereof in a positions established by their (insert) shape. This negates the muscular action in the arch. If the muscles do not have to work they become weaker and less able to do their job which is to support the arch.

Well instructed Pilates footwork on the Reformer will help develop the required muscles ability to 'lift' the arch as best as they are able but if the severity of your dropped arches is bad this will only lessen the problem not solve it.

Also try walking barefoot as often as possible. Make those foot muscles do what they are designed to, namely hold the arch under load. Shoes tend to make feet lazy and could exacerbate your problem.

I have flat feet too! I am a gymnast so it really effects my gymnastics. What you need to do is go to a foot doctor and he will buy you arch supports that are going to help but nothing can fix flat feet.

You can't fix it but there are plenty of exercises to strengthen your feet and that is what really matters. No matter how beautiful a person's feet are if they are weak they are useless.
Try this:
sit on the floor with one foot in front of you and the end of a towel (bath or hand) under your toes (the other foot can be wherever). Using your toes pull the towel under your foot without lifting your heal, and really try to spread your toes out. When you get to the end of the towel do it in reverse, push the towel back out with just your toes. Repete on the other side
Hope that helps.

I'm currently attempting to do research in order to determine if flat feet can be corrected with a series of exercises. If you'd like info on it, email me at k.sordo@verizon.net.do

I do not think you can "fix" it but have special inner soles for your shoes to reduce the discomfort. In any event, consult an orthopedic doctor for expert advice.
