My site is on a free hosting service and they have a lot of popups and banners all over the place. I know I'm going to have to put up with some ads, but what free hosting service can I move to where the url will be short and the ads will be fairly tolerable?

For free LAMP hosting, http://www.addyour.net is ad-free.

For free Windows / ASP hosting, http://www.asphost4free.com is ad-free

For cheap LAMP hosting, http://www.dreamhost.com is the best.

For cheap Windows / ASP hosting, http://www.webhost4life.com is the best I've found.

I have tried the free places and for one reason or another they are all bad.
I am now using Yahoo hosting and paying 11.95 a month. I can do what I want and know that it will still be there in the morning. No more of this make changes upload and then hope they don't reload an old backup in the middle of a sale........
Not to mention the excellent tech support. They can usually answer my questions on the QT.
If you have no choice but the free service you may wish to do the 4 buck a month thing at Godaddy I have looked at that but have not tried it. Good luck on the free ones.

PowWeb.com isn't free..but it is close. Its only $7 a month (with a discount for a full year up front)...but you get a TON of bandwidth and storage.

If that isn't the answer...perhaps you have a high speed internet connection and an old PC laying around. They make great "free web servers" with a little research and elbow grease.

I offer free hosting by request only. simply goto my site and scroll to the bottom of http://www.yallways.com where it says "contact the Webmaster" and use that to email me. no ads or nothing by the way. ftp access.

just let me know how much space you need, your username and a requested password. you will have a domain like "username.yallways.com" and optional email address if you want which is "username@yallways.com" with identical storage space as your webspace account.

I dont allow hositng of copyrighted material or download sites though. This includes streaming media files.

Personally, I recommend Yahoo/Geocities. Inexpensive and easy to use. Quite a bit of space, bandwidth and tools for what you pay per month. They have packages starting at like $10 a month. I don't recall the exact figures but that is who I and a few of my clients have web space through.
