A mercury thermometer is still the gold standard. However, they are being phased out because of valid environmental concerns. Ear thermometers are not the best choice for the lay person because 1) they have to be correctly aimed at the eardrum, 2) the canal has to be relatively free of wax, and 3) if the child has just come in from the cold, the reading will be abnormally low. You might search Consumers Reports or ask your doctor. Don't buy the cheapest product.

Certain ear thermometers work, however oral are supposed to be the most accurate. Have you tried BD thermometers? Those are a good brand. My doctor recomends those. Be weary, however, of armpit thermometers, they are difficult to read because they are often lower than your real temp. They cannot read the body temperature well. Anal ones tend to be difficult to understand, as they usually are a degree or so higher than most other thermometers.
Overall, I would suggest anything made by BD.
