First I want to say this is one of the greatest movies i've seen. But one thing I never figured out, because maybe I missed it, was the brown envelope leo dicaprios character gave to the psychiatrist. He told her to open it in 2 weeks, but I never saw her do it. I never saw the letter after she put it in her desk. What was it. Also, wouldn't have been better if they said the baby was billy costigans, and not the "sargents"

Not sure, but I just rented the movie tonight! Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg are my top two favorite actors and I'm so excited that they are both in this together. I can't wait to see it!

****Update (for what it's worth): The envelope had information about Matt Damon's Characters guilt. They leave you hanging at the end as to whether it was opened and she told Marky-Marks character, and he then killed Damon's character. Or if Mark Wahlbergs character just killed him out of jealousy. I think she opened it though. And you're right, whose baby was it? It almost had to be Leos.

What a great movie that was! I may watch it again. The first 45 minutes were hard to sit through (slow and nothing but profanity!) but it sure did make up for that in the end. It had to be good with all those wonderful actors. I like Damon and Wahlberg (he should have had a much bigger role!!!!) but Leo was terrific!

They never show you what's in the envelope...So it's up to your imagination, really. It could be proof of his real identity, evidence on Costello and his mole Sullivan, a letter explaining why he couldn't get close to her, or even family photos. (Think how Costigan sits and looks at photos of his mom, and how he admires the childhood photo of Madolyn - it's something he cares about.)

I think it's something that's deliberately left open-ended, so we don't have all the answers - just like the characters in the movie are always operating half in the dark.

I also think it's open-ended as to whose baby it is. Me, I think it's Costigan's. We hear that Sullivan had trouble getting it up, we never see him and Madolyn getting it on - in fact, the only sex scene is with Costigan. Plus, Madolyn cries for Costigan and won't even look at Sullivan, which suggests to me the former is really the father of the baby.

i personally think it is the paperwork of costellos attorney contacting Costigan... you remember when he says "costellos attorney kept everything on tape." i think that was the attorneys info so that she would open it and have access to the tapes just incase but the movie ended before she could do anything with them. so i guess its true it is left open for interpretation.

I watched the movie last night. No, they did not show if she opened it or not.
