Do you find this a very awkward position to be in - they are 18 and now responsible for their own actions. Yet they are still in school and live under your roof.
My son is now resisting our authority, and feels he can live by his own rules. If we make him move out now, he will certainly drop out of high school. (He has his own jr. college tuition saved up). If we allow him to stay, we plan on making him leave after graduation. We have a 13 year old girl who is watching us parent him closely.

He is untrustworthy, lying to us, gambling(sports bets), verbally abusive, we have caught him with alcohol, and is not at all helpful here at home. We have taught him better than this and are completely frustrated. He has a great summer job, and has purchased his own car, gas and insurance - so he's pretty self-sufficient. Any suggestions on how to endure though May?.

AAAHHHH I hope I don't have to face such a cituation in the next 10 plus years. You got me thinking on what I would do when I get there. I'm not the most patient person nor like things done half *** or people trying to be weasels. I have confronted my kids various times about certain things they have done and hopefully when they get older they'll understand. Even though they get me mad I always try to threat them well and do something positive for them. I sometimes have to force myself to do it though.

What I would do is Tell your kid that You will let him stay in your house until he finishes high school because somebody has to save him from being and idiot. And that when he grows up and wiser he won't be able to blame you for his failures. Then let him stay until that time. Once that time is up you are no longer legally bound to him so he can get the hell out or play by the rules. That way you did the right thing and at the same time put the responsibility of his life into his own hands as the adult he is. What ever he does from there is his problem and since you always did the right thing he cannot used you as an excuse. Of course, leave the door open for when he figures out he screwed up cause when he does and he will, he will realized his actions and he will need a place to stay. Always lead by example.

I have an 18 year old daughter who wants to move out, but she is still in school. I have heard that there is some way I can keep her home until she finishes school her in Pennsylvania. What can I do to make her stay at home? She has a job and is planning on moving in with her 18 year old boyfriend and his mom. Can she do this in Pennsylvania?

for one he probably feels the same way. he probably thinks that your rules don't work as you think his rules don't work. throw him out see what kind of relationship you have in a year. do you throw a 4 year old out when they do something wrong because they didn't listen to you because they want to be independent. do you throw out your 11 year old because they mouth off because they are going through a weird time in their life. no, the answer is no. its your kid and you are supposed to love him unconditionally. not just when he's not being a pain in your***, all the time. the only reason he should be made to leave the family home would be if he was abusive to the other children in the home. but if his conflict is only with the parents he just wants independents. over look him for the time being.

My best advice is , since he is 18 years old. let him by his own rules, tell him to get his own place. and let him see if he can support him self. in todays world, I know this sounds mean and harsh, and it really not mean't to be. but maybe if he is on his own he will realize how good he has it living with you. and your 13 years old does not have to watch whats going on with him. and be glad that he is self-sufficient. I think he will do good at anything he puts his mind to but paying for his own car, and insurance,is not that hard to do when he is living at home with you, and if he drops out of school that is his choice.. good luck.

Either he is a respectful obedient boarder or he is out....As long as he lives under your roof....he must abide by your rules...Your desire for him not to fail...is the thing that will bring failure...he believes he has you over a barrel...I know I am a mom...If he drops out of school...that is his choice...not yours...don't teach your kids that it is okay for you to be treated as a rug. Sorry...no disrespect allowed in this house.

Just love him the best you can. I think that's all you can do. As parents you sound like you're doing the right thing as far as dealing with him.

Show him the door, if he drops out of highschool now it will be on HIS head also, the day he turned 18 would have been the day he started paying rent in my home.

Continue to insist on him following your rules and hope the next three months go by quickly.
