Make your own powder. 5 parts of Baking soda to 1 part salt, a tiny pinch of Cayenne, or a pinch of mustard powder,(optional) 5-6 drops of Cinnamon or peppermint oil. Shake well, or better yet, blend until salt turns to powder.

It will not cause cavities. Fluoride is harmful to your general health. If it ever worked to reduce cavities it did so by delaying the eruption of teeth by retarding their growth in the first place. You body must use a lot of calcium to eliminate fluoride from your body. This use of calcium slows the development of teeth in children resulting in fewer cavities because the teeth had either not yet surfaced or they had not been above the gums for as long. Another way fluoride may be credited with the reduction of "carries" is by causing the entire surface of the teeth to become brittle so that the entire tooth is worn away evenly enough not to form holes. Fluoride interferes with the enzymes that bacteria use, but it also does so for the probiotics, leaving your whole body less healthy. A pea sized amount of toothpaste has as much fluoride as an 8 oz. glass of fluoridated water. A Chinese study demonstrated a 15 point reduction in IQ after a sublingual dose of fluoride was given... at a smaller amount than what is found in fluoridated toothpaste. Fluoride is a main ingredient in thorazine, anesthetics, rat poison, and many pesticides. Fluoride is an iodine antagonist. It causes the symptoms of iodine deficiency even when there is plenty of iodine in the diet. Iodine deficiency causes erratic behavior in the thyroid, but mostly causes hypothyroidism, depression/anxiety, lower metabolism resulting in obesity and increased likelihood of suicide. Fluoride is a key ingredient in many anti-depressants which warn that they may make symptoms worse. Fluoride is more immediately toxic than lead. Make sure that your water is not fluoridated and don't drink or eat processed foods which use or add water. Filtered water is not fluoride free. Switching to fluoride free toothpaste is a great first step to improving your health. There are many other things to consider in attempting to become fluoride free. Taking calcium and iodine supplements can help eliminate fluoride from your body.

When I use toothpaste I use Toms of Maine, but most of the time I brush my teeth with safeguard bar soap or with baking soda. At my last dental visit the hygienist said my gums look the best ever. She was shocked when I told her I was brushing with soap.
I stay away from fluoride because I have a thyroid problem. Fluoride slows down the production of thyroid hormone
Here's some info I copied from a newsletter a while back " Soap washes off in just 2 rinses. What about toothpastes? Glycerine
in all tooth pastes is so sticky that it takes 27 washes to get it
off.
Teeth brushed with any toothpaste are coated with a film and CANNOT
PROPERLY RE-ENAMELIZE.
Taking calcium and phosphate in the diet results in re-enamelization
of the teeth, but only when they are clean.
Bar soap does a perfect job in cleaning the surface.
The enamel thickens and becomes less sensitive.
Adenosine diphosphatase furnishes phosphate to teeth.
Gums are disinfected by brushing with any bar soap."

Fluoride is safe as long as you don't swallow it. Even if you swallow some once in a while it's ok. There's one called Ultrashine. The link has a long description about how it works. What you need to do is just browse the active ingredients of different toothepastes. Also, ask your dentist.
