commonly, a virus is code that replicates itself, either inside the host, or by attaching to some outbound data stream (mail, etc.) where it finds a nice warm place to do it all over again, till the cows come home. often, a good virus, will trans pose itself to resemble an innocous bit of data, which can fool a non-educated person (or computer operating system) into thinking it's part of the data stream, intake this entire stream and bingo! they often spread thmeselves through attachments (e-mail for instance) or they can be made to cause 'buffer overruns' which have to do with the way packets are handled in the 'stack' protocols for many platforms.
