pretty much any turtle, even the cute little green babies, grow to at least 8 inches in diameter (think as long as a dinner plate)
Red Ear Sliders are the most common, though they are illegal in many states and restricted in others.
To budget for a turtle, think big. Really big. 40 gallon breeder tank...yes, get one. Minimum. per turtle. A five gallon physically fits a baby, but the baby will not live a full life, will be stunted, and die within a year, maybe two. the reason why they don't outgrow the tank...becuase they become so infested with paracites, fungus, and bacteria that they die. Turltes aren't expanding foam, they won't grow until they break the tank, they grow until they develop a disease and die. You would stay small too if you grew up in a bath tub. end rant. so...40 gallon breeder, screen top, 40 gallon or higher internal filter or external canister filter, heater, thermometer, basking area, dry thermometer, basking lamp, basking bulb, night lamp, night bulb, UVA/UVB lighting fixture and bulb, water conditioner, various turtle foods, and turtle.
It will run you amywhere from $150-300 for the necessary basics if you go with anything from a 20 gallon long to a 40 gallon breeder. you will, however, HAVE to upgrade the tank.
I love my two rescue turtles, but they cost a lot of money....a freakin lot of moeny...
Turtle have a life span of well over 20 years and up depending on the type. Sadly, most young aquatic turtles don't make it past 6 months...
sorry to be a downer and preachy...bit when you work with pets and the people who take care of them, there are only a handful that are willing to purchase what is needed for the pet. After a while, you just want to club them senseless. It gets really hard to smile when people say they want/have a turtle, becuase most of the time, it just doesn't work out...to many times someone comes to me telling me stories about how their turtle died...
just plan on a lot and you will be a great turlte parent:)

all AQUATIC turtles grow to the size of there environment. They are the only reptile that can do this without getting metabolic bone disease. If you have a 10 gallon and put one slider in there, you can count on about 5 or 6 inches. IF you put them in a 60 gallon there will get anywhere from 8-11 inches. Aquatic turtles include, Cumberland sliders, red eared sliders(which are illegal to sell since 2007), yellow belly sliders, painted (western, eastern, and southern), musk, Florida snapper, and many more. However no land turtles, or tortoises grow to the size of there environment they just grow no matter what.

Reeves turtles are quite small, intelligent, and easily tamed. All in all, a good turtle that doesn't grow much.

I also Have red eared sliders and do not recommend them... while they do stay small for the first year to 18 mos they then can outgrow their environment, i have had my (3) for 4 years now and they are the size of dinner plates- I've now had to upgrade to a 150 gallon aquarium.
I highly recommend you do some research on www.turtletimes.com before making a decision- also keep in mind most turts can out live humans if kept under proper conditions.

Red Eared Slider turtles. I have two of them. It's really cool because they only grow the size of their tank. So if you wanted it to stay small, just keep it in a smaller tank. I have had mine for like almost a year now and they still look like babies.
