I have a 1993 BMW 318i and everytime I start the car during winter, it squeeks real loud and when I press the gas it squeeks even louder, it goes away when the engine warms up a little. I've had this problem since last winter and it only occurs during winter. What can be the problem?

Alternator could be going bad.

I replaced the belts when I purchased my 1993 318i with 184,000 miles. I replaced the engine at 207,000 miles but I had to replace the starter. The alternator was going bad on me but provided enough juice to keep the car going. I never got around to replacing the alternator.

When it gets cold out, the battery looses more of it's charge.
It uses more battery power turning over a cold engine.
And, the belts are probably worn.

When you start your car, the alternator is trying to recharge the battery and the belt is slipping on the alternator pulley.

The belts will get noisy in the cold when they are old and dry, needs replacement.
