YES!!!!
And it was inspired by something that happened to the author's son when he was about eight. Now he's helped write the script for the movie.
For the person concerned about the movie trailer, it's marketing: the fantasy parts are played up for the commercials. In the actual movie, they occur near the end. Haven't seen the movie, but several people on a children's listserv have and they are thrilled. The most reassuring thing is that Katherine Paterson herself is very pleased with the movie and says that it's faithful to her book.

It is a lovely book and deeply moving. It won a newberry award when it came out (award for best children's novel of the year.)
The movie trailer looks very different from my impression of the book. The book is really about these two friends, leslie and the boy (peter is his name I think?) and the relationship and friendship between them, and how friendship and closeness can change you if things in your life change. The "creating a magic world" thing is much less important. it's not like Narnia, where the kids get whisked away to a "real" fantasy universe. The kids in Terebithia always know they are playing, it's simply that they are so close and so committed to their imagination that it seems very real and vivid.
My point is that the movie, from what I've seen of the trailer, seems to be selling itself as very narnia-esque with the two kid actors fighting trolls and beasts and lots of special effects. This isn't at all the main point of the book and if you are looking for a good "fantasy" book I think you will be disappointed, and you'd be better off with Chronicles of Narnia or The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman. This book is very, very real and very much about the human qualities of what happens to them.
I loved it when I read it as a kid and many kids I know today who read it say it's one of their favorite books. But I have had tough, video games and skater and fights in the schoolyard kind of boys (students of mine) who tell me (privately) that reading "bridge to terebithia" is the only time in their lives that a book made them cry. So that's what you should expect if you read it (not a cool fun fantasy thing.)

The Bridge to Terabithia is a wonderful book. Read it, DON'T see the movie. Just from the previews, it looks like the movie is just an insult to the greatness of the book. The movie completely corrupts what is so great about the book.
