Chipmunks have internal cheek patches for carrying food.
When a chipmunk finds seeds or nuts on the ground or in trees he stuffs them in his cheeks to carry them back to his underground burrow. It is amazing how much food they can carry in their cheeks.
They keep large underground caches of food for the occasional period of waking during the cold months and for use in early spring in areas still covered by snow.
