go to www.aim.com and click install now. follow the directions that comes with it.
and be careful of other stuff they try to make you download with it too such as weather bug. i hated that thing!
also be careful of viruses when you do get AIM because sometimes it can be deceiving . like you will get an IM that says different things one says something like
Hey! Look at my pictures from vacation! and it gives you a link. DON"T CLICK THOSE. just be careful! good luck, have fun.

You don't really need to know anything. Well actually yes you do. haha. Well first to download it just go to www.aim.com and follow the instructions. After you've created a screen name and account, ask around to your friends for their screen names and give out yours. To add buddy's, you normally right click on your buddies button on your and press "add buddy" then put in one of your friends screen names. That's basically all you need to know.

Well if you have a mac just use iChat and save yourself some frustration, and if you have windows go to aim.com and download it and its a piece of cake from there.
