So the other day all of a sudden my check engine light came on. Nothing seems different or wrong with my car, but it's stayed on for over a week now, and I've never seen it on before. I took the car into a shop to have them check the problem, but they couldn't locate the plug on my model. The guy spent a good while looking before getting another guy, who seemed to know what he was doing well enough, and he hunted up and down for it, even looked through the car manual and everything. He said he's never seen a car that didn't have the plug in the places they checked. Is there something special about my car that it's hidden elsewhere? It's really weird...it should be there under the dash...it just isn't...

Help?

Auto Zone will pull the codes, but usually will not clear them. Common failures could be Oxygen sensor, coolant temp sensor and Mass Air Flow sensor (you will lose power if this is this case). Have you checked your fuel economy lately? If it is down, it could be an oxygen sensor. Once you find out what is wrong, a competent garage that works on imports can fix it. The Honda dealership is not always the cheapest. The car has been out long enough that it does not have to have a dealer to fix it.

a 1998 honda accord has it on the left hand side of the steering as the pic here details >> http://www.msu.edu/~guentche/guentchev/OBD-II/J9162-location.jpg

the 1990-1997 accords were literally the same and the 1990 accord had its OBD connector on the passenger side, Under the Glove compartment. It was a Blue connector. See if your 1997 accord has it in the same location.

Make sure it is not a model that was made in a different country. An example would be that some Canadian made models of cars have subtle differences than the similar American models.

While i am not certain about your model some of the earlier accords you had to look at the ecm itself there was a small "window" were you check the codes, pretty sure yours wont be like this though!!Good Luck

if it seems to run fine, try unplugging your battery. and then plug it back in. what this does is resets your ecu to a factory setting. sometimes the computer may get a bad reading, it could be something stupid, like humidity, moisture somewhere, but try that, if that doesn't work, go to a Honda dealership.

your obd connector is behind the ash tray..remove it and u will see it sittin right there...there is no cover hiding it just the ash tray!
u may want to call the honda dealer someof them depending on your mileage have an emissions warranty that extends it to 150k miles so u might can get it fixed for free!
