Unipolar depression, or bipolar for that matter, can manifest in children as young as four or five.
Good luck and blessed be.

Depression can happen to children, teens and adults. There are many reasons, most have to do with trauma suffered in life, or ineffective methods of coping. Not everyone learns good coping skills from their parents, simply because the parents didn't learn them either.

There are degrees of depression, severe and more common depression that lasts a short period of time and is not debilitating. Hormones play a part in depression too, teens often feel depressed simply because their hormones are going crazy.

You can seek out some help by talking to a counselor at school or going to one outside of school. Either way, talk therapy is good. I do not recommend any sort of medication for anyone that does not have suicidal thoughts or is not diagnosed with a certain mental illness. Working out what the issues are and learning how to cope better is the key.

There's no age limit on depression-- it's common across nearly all age groups. It's caused by problems with the neurotransmitter serotonin, so it has a biological basis, and there are lots of psychological factors. A lot of teens are susceptible due to hormonal variations upsetting brain chemistry-- compounded with daily problems like stress and lack of sleep.

I've had depression on and off since I was 15; some of my friends have battled it since they were twelve. The most important thing to keep in mind is that depression doesn't make you insane or weird, or mean that you have mental problems. It's a normal, biological problem that can be easily helped.

ps. I find that sleeping enough and exercising regularly really help

Depression can occur at nearly any age. The real question is what causes it? There are many incidents recorded in your mind. When something happens around you you can be reminded of them. If there is upset, fear or other emotion it can occur again now. This is explained in a DVD called Dianetics: A Visual Guidebook to the Mind by Ron Hubbard

depression is common (sometimes referred to as "the common cold of mental illness"), affecting 10 to 15 % of the adult population at some point in life, it is not commonly known that depression in childhood is also a major health problem. In fact, depression in children is arguably more significant of an issue that is adult depression. For example, about 5% of children at any given time suffer from clinical depression; this naturally occurs during critical phases in child development, and not only can show itself with behaviors and feelings not commonly viewed as part of a "depression," but can interfere with the normal developmental processes of childhood.

Depression in children can, if untreated, affect school performance and learning, social interactions and development of normal peer relationships, self-esteem and life skill acquisition, parent-child relations and a child's sense of bonding and trust, can lead to substance abuse, disruptive behaviors, violence and aggression, legal troubles, and even suicide. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among children and adolescents, just behind accidents and violence. Moreover, depressive thinking can become part of a child's developing personality, leaving long-term effects in place for the rest of a child's life. get your self some profesional help as I have been treated for depression panic attacks personality disorders I'm now 37 caint work always stressed and worrying nothings changed in all the years and now they saying i got adhd so get some proper help of someone how nose what they are doing good look and feel free to reply ::a friend

If you are feeling depressed or are worried about someone else it is best not to self diagnose. Depression can be temporary or it can be like diabetes or asthma - something that you always have, and can get better and worse, but it doesnt go away. However depression is often over diagnosed and not always treated appropriately. If youre concerned, talk about your feelings with a professional you trust, like your school nurse or counsellor, or your GP.
