well depends on how thick the ice is. also how cold it is out side if it is a nicer day then i believe you could do it with a garden hose and cold water if you wanted to really shovel. if its cold out side i dont know how much it will melt the ice. i live in montana and we get alot of ice my suggestion is use ice salt it will melt right through it with very little effort from you

Not likely to work, especially if it is very cold outside. Boiling water actually freezes at a FASTER rate than cooler water. You will simply end up with a bigger mess and probably more slippery ice. Salting it also will not work if the temperature is below 10 F. Sorry, but about all you can do is pour some sand on to improve the traction til the weather warms up.

It is hard to carry enough boiling water to do any good on thick ice - it bores a hole in the ice and starts chilling. If you can do it, fasten a hose to a fauset that can deliver hot water (like a clothes washer connection) or even running cold water and take the hose out and get a valley eroded that you can did at and widen the sides.

Even if you shovel the melted ice away, you will still be left with ice once the water freezes again.
