Fish (Pisces) and crabs (Cancer) live in the water, but scorpions don't. They live in the desert, so shouldn't they be an earth sign?

When you look at the signs, they are astrological honey, they relate to our level of elements differently. If you are into astrology, you should know that the sign name is given according to the stars and where they were aligned when they were discovered. It further goes on to explain the theory of power behind each sign...that how they became part of our element. Yes, scorpios are not known for any deep sea diving, but like the sea, they are powerful, they can change in an instant and they are very mysterious. You have to look beneath the definition of each sign to fully understand why they were labled as such elements. Some, like the air (weather) are rather predictable, others like the water sign are not.

I don't think the the horoscope symbols and their elements match up all the time. It might be that it just happened the fire, earth, air, and water sign cycle just happened to come when the scorpion constellation was up. Plus, the signs describe the persons personalities more (fire is passionate, earth is steady, air is happy, water is sensitive, etc.).

they represent boiling water, because they can take the entense heat of the desert ,their water is of a deeper nature and they know where to find it.out of every set of elements in the zodiac ,water earth air and fire one sign in every three doesn't represent its element on the visual or habitat level but is still of that element.

No one knows the answer to that. Aquarius is the water bearer and yet it is an air sign. Go figure.
