Americans were scared of getting their ships intercepted because the Mississippi river was right on the border between America and The Louisiana Territory, so the government was pressured to either start a war with France (Who owned the territory) or buy it from france. They (government, people) also had a dream that their country would expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean (as it does today), and Napolean needed money because he was constantly getting into wars with the British, so he sold it to America for only $15 Million dollars, which was a steal for America.
