Do you like the Hero(ine)s to be good looking and still have quirks? Do you like someone to be skilled in martial arts from being a klutz? Do you like your Hero(ine)s to be chased by major bad guys (mob, motorcycle gangs, drug cartels)? Would you mind a Heroine that is married and has kids?

None of that matters as much as if I care about the character, if the character comes across as a real person. A character who is just a bunch of gimicks ("Oh, I'm a klutzy blind gardener with facial twitches who gets psychic insights!") may not be as interesting as someone who is just an average person with a sense of humor. And her marital status isn't as important as her relationships with her family, who need to be "real people" too.

Good luck!

The main characters should have both strengths and faults if they're going to be more than stereotypes. The most important aspect of any novel is what the main character wants. Who or what is standing in the way? What are the repercussions of failure?
