I'll admit, I am a conservative. But I have always dated liberals. Something about hippie chicks. LOL; Seriously, what makes you a liberal? What are your core believes?

Chance 20 and Skylor have the best answers. Too bad I can't call it a tie. Both were extremely thought out answers. Chance 20 is too much like me: Social liberal; Economic Conservative. The nod goes to Skylor.
Again great answers from all, way better than I expected. I must have asked this question on an "internet" night for smart peeps. Congrats; and I look forward to more conversation.

1. I believe in social justice, that all people are created equal, and that individual differences are largely irrelevant. Everyone has the right to be treated fairly.
2. I believe in social mobility. If you have ability and talent, and are willing to work hard, you should be able to achieve anything you want to make a better life for yourself and your family. It goes without saying that everyone deserves those opportunities.
3. I believe that government is the best vehicle to make our world a better place. That's what government is designed to do, and no other institution can claim that.
4. I believe in the proper stewardship of the Earth, its resources, its environment, and all its forms of life.
5. I believe that peace and diplomacy are always in our best interests. War is a failure of diplomacy.
If you accept these as postulates, everything, I mean everything, else follows.
If you really care to debate me off this forum, my e-mail is skylor_williams@yahoo.com. But don't try to flame me here; how fair is that?
Skylor Williams
PS: I'm actually a moderate, but I married a conservative.

Well, if this is a serious question, I started off somewhat conservative when i was younger, and have become more liberal with age. In the military, which is a pretty conservative culture, I found myself disagreeing more and more with core issues, like the war with Iraq and the proper responses to 9/11. When I married my wife, who is black, I learned a lot of my views of the world are totally differant from how others percieve it. After I became a father, I realized there were many who would prevent my daughter from doing many things or would treat her badly because she was a woman. These factors, and many others, slowly molded me into a social liberal.
That said, i recognize that just as many conservative ideas are pretty bad, so are many liberal ideas. You can't give welfare to someone forever and expect them to take responsibility for their actions. Welfare reform is a good conservative idea. However, many conservatives I know would get rid of welfare altogether, and let social darwanism rule. Helping those who need it, thats a good liberal idea.
So I am a social liberal, a fiscal moderate, but on yahoo boards I tend to sway further left just to counterbalance many of the far right opinions I see.

My political convictions come from having lived abroad (mostly western Europe) and seen how other countries have chosen to do things, and what a benefit it has been for them. I've seen people who enjoy a higher standard of living, and have less crime and very few homeless people. Spending money on social services seems like not only the humane thing to do, but also the smart thing to do. I would rather have my tax dollars go towards helping people in my own country, than killing people far away. I also think that putting more responsibility on businesses to provide people with QUALITY jobs (livable wages, vacation time, maternity leave, etc) is important. So many people work so hard, but are denied these things because they're jobs are considered unworthy. That doesn't seem right. If you want people to clean up after you, make your coffee, and bag your groceries, you should be willing to let them have those things too.

Look, I'd be a Conservative if I could, but I just can't drum up the energy.
Being a Liberal is fun. It's kind of like living in your parents' basement and smoking dope until they finally kick you out. I'll admit we don't really have any solutions, but that's the genius of being a Liberal: let the stupid Conservatives work themselves into an early grave solving the world's problems.
Being a Liberal is so cool because we can just decide on stuff because it feels good. If it turns out we're wrong, big deal. Let the suits handle it.

Education, nice to fellow folks and personal integrity.
Seriously, thanks for the question, because I also wonder what makes a person to be a hypocrite conservative. You cons are the true evil in this nation, and there are 30% of you in this population. It is a truly huge evil force.
Congratulations, I think?

I think people should be able to have freedom as long as no one else but them and their property is harmed.
I'm also for helping the needy and avoiding war.

I look at what BushCo. represents and propogates and say WTF. I see no laws or legislation passed the last six years that helps any sector of the economy except the elite and I say WTF. I watch one Administration official after another get indicted or convicted or become under investigation and say WTF.
I watched my state go basically into bankruptcy after a Republican controlled Governor and legislature ran their terms and I said WTF.
I don't mind practical Conservatives--I just wonder when they are gonna say WTF!!
