Anti-virus programs vary in their detection capacity. It depends on how the developer detects a virus or anticipates one by constant vigilance. Hence the need to issue updates, as and when different viruses are created. Some anti-virus programs are thus unable to detect all the viruses that infect a computer.
It is also possible that if your ant-virus program has not been renewed, it may lag behind in detecting latest viruses.
This applies to anti spy ware/ad ware programs too, since more and more spy ware/ad ware programs get circulated.
It is a never-ending process: creation of virus/spy ware/ad ware/Trojans, and attempts to remove these. Humans really can be competitive in this sphere!
Reminds one of what people say that thieves are one step ahead of the police. Every police outfit does not catch all thieves by itself.. Sometimes it has to get the help of others. This goes for anti-virus too!

not all antivirus programs are created equal. some find more than others. if you have that many, however, you have serious problems.
