Because he is from another country and us Americans know nothing about him and his talents.
Also if you looked at him and watched him run, you would think that he isn't very athletic, but with his height he was probably forced to play basketball.

The crowd booed because of two reasons. He was Chinese and he was one of the "Asian" people to emerge a start in the NBA. When you see NBA stars, they are usually black. So, Yao Ming wasn't considered a great player because he was Chinese and because no one knew much about him. Secondly, peple thought he was another Shawne Bradley those tall guys who you know...so yea. racism has taken this world apart. So, that's why Yao was booed on that draft

I booed because i thought it was shawn bradley all over again. Finally this season is showing why he deserved it. Bradley was another 7'6" player who didn't quite pan out cos all he had was hight in my opinion. Also if you look at the draft not many marque players were in it. Aside from Amare who wasn't known at the time, nene also not known and butler who really came good this year. I think anyone would have been booed. lol.
