Smaller celestial bodies, such as the moon or Mars, lack the gravational pull to keep an atmosphere. Of greater importance is the fact that the Earth has a magnetic shield that deflects most of the oncoming solar radiation. Without this shield this radiation would strip the Earth of some or most of its atmosphere.
