I doubt it was invented at all. It just happened naturally, like anything. More of a discovery than an invention.
What's your favourite kind?
Mmmm.. Sour southers are pretty good. I like those sour peaches, but I can't eat too many.
Rhubarb pie is a classic. Not a candy, but a dessert.
How about lemonheads? Those are great and the box is so cute.
My mouth is puckering up as I type.
