It was but recent revelations and uncover data has shown that the Japanese message they had sent to their Ambassador to be presented to our Government at a specific time was to have alerted the Americans so they would be ready. Their Bushido warrior code considered it a disgrace to strike a foe that was not ready! Strange what history can still teach you?

Now you need 24 more! God Bless You and The Southern People.

I agree it was known earlier but not the fact that the Japanes involved felt slighted and as if they had violated their code. Have you ever heard that Australia's papers printed a story about the strike a month earlier?

Here are a few things to get you started

The first wave of Japanese planes was detected by an early (almost experimental) radar system but they were thought to be a flight of US bombers coming from the mainland and an alarm was not sent out.

The Japanese had actually planned to launch the attack on Dec 8 (8 being an auspicious number), but they did not take into account the international date line. The word for 7 in Japanese is the same or similar to the word for death. This haunted the Japanese throughout the war and was effectively by US intelligence forces to demoralize the Japanese. (learned this from a psychology professor years ago who had worked for US Naval intelligence in the pacific theater)

The Japanese were hoping to cripple the Pacific fleet, but the US aircraft carriers were at sea at the time of the attack. The carriers became the only near term effective naval force that the US had in the Pacific. At the first major engagement, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the US carriers effectively prevented the Japanese from invading Australia, losing one carrier in the process.

Good point by southron_98 (answerer 5), but the revelation is not all that recent. Yes, Tokyo instructed their ambassador in Washington to hand over to the Secretary of State (Cordell Hull) a declaration of war at 1 pm Washington time, but they did not tell him why the timing was so important. He screwed up by deciding it needed retyped to look neater, the bombs began falling at about 1:50 pm, and he handed over the retyped message at 2:20 pm. He had no idea what long-lasting disgrace and contempt he had brought upon his nation by this delay.

These details were in the first (1967) edition of the book cited below.

All of the Battleships in the Harbor were sunk but yet we were able to raise every one but two of the battleships and back into service. The famed Arizona and Oklahoma were lost. The others will get their revenge later on in the battle of Leyte Gulf. they Shot all but two destroyers and a cruiser of the Japanese southern force.
