They will in all likelihood have some level of autonomy but actual independence is unlikely. Turkey, Iraq, and Iran are united on this one as an independent Iraqi Kurdistan would likely cause terrorism in their countries and Iraq desires to stay whole. While western nations may think it best for independence, it’s not something they'd fall on their sword for.

If any country needs to be completely dismantled, it's Turkey. Search for the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, or whatever that is in Turkish gobble, to see what they try to do to places with ethnic groups they don't like. They are much worse in that regard than the US, and they don't even have the punch to back it up. The 20 million Kurds in Turkey all live in the one area, the unofficial Turkish Kurdistan, but Turkey wants the land, so they won't give it up. Those Kurds already DO want their own country, and fight for it. Anytime anyone in Turkey says Kurdistan, the 'unbiased' authorities yell PKK and the jails get another political prisoner. The only facts on PKK come through either Turkey, or the PKK itself, so no information on them can be trusted, but Turkish soldiers ALWAYS die in Turkish Kurdistan, because the locals don't want them there.

The Kurds in Kurdistan 'love' America and are looking for America to 'love' them back by assisting in their gaining their Indepence from Iraq. However, the Prime Minister does not want this. 99.9% of the Kurdistans want to be independent of Iraq. The Kurds look at the Americans being in Iraq as a "liberation" not an 'invasion'.

My personal opinion on Kurdistan attempting to gain their indepence is:

I fear that if they should attempt to be independent at this time, with the situation as it is in the rest of Iraq, that it may cause an invasion into Kurdistan, which is in total control of itself and not involved in the violence of war.

I know that the Kurdistant army is strong and disciplined. I know that Turkey and Iran do not want this indepence. Would this attempt anger either of these countries enough to get involved and try to prevent Kurdistan from being indepent.

I just fear more deaths and violence to a people that finally have a Prime Minister that loves its people so much that he is trying to keep them at peace. The Kurds have seen too much violence and death of their loved ones.

And what about Kurkook [sp?] ?
Kurdistant would like to regain control of this city.
But....so does everyone else.

I don't know if trying to gain indepence would be better at
a time when situations in the rest of Iraq are more stable.

I pray for Kurdistan.....
that it's people stay safe and happy and at peace.

Unfortunately Turkey, a NATO ally, is dead opposed to Kurdish independence, but you are right in the end Iraq will end up being divided into three semi autonomous regions. Kurds in the north, Sunis in the middle and Shia in the south. Estimates say that each month over 100,000 peple move within Iraq to be in their own ethnic area protected by their own militia.

One of the many reasons why the allies invaded was to free the kurds as well as give security to this part of the western middle east!
the genocide and mass emigration to the west in the 90's goes to prove this!

True, but they also have militants of their own with a desire for more land, etc.

The more we concentrate on our differences, the less harmonious our lives are going to be.
