i too wondered why this is the case. i dont get why its also considered "hot" when women get together but thought "gross" when men hook up. i kind of figured it out though....
i think its because we live in a male dominated society and a lot of the typical ideals of males are what influences the majority of people's thoughts. a lot of straight men think women checking each other out as "hot" or attractive and dont think that they're lesbians because of it. yet on the other hand, those same men think that its gay and not acceptable for a guy to check another guy out.
im with you though in that i also think there are some men out there who compare themselves or just any man to others, gay or straight. they'll never admit to it though because of the standards that are written into our society. its quite sad... but its the truth.

As an older man(I'm 64yrs old) I have an advantage in that I understand why some people think this way.It comes from a long history of suppression of women in Western culture.By suppressing a woman's natural libido(sex drive) women were controlled by men. They were perceived as asexual beings and internalized this.Only men were sexual and women were not.So today women are allowed are allowed to check each other out because it is not sexual. If a man checks out another male it is sexual a taboo(homosexual)Males are very visual when selecting a mate. The fallacy of this belief is that a woman is sexually inferior to a man and it is OK for "asexual" women to look at other women.Men are "sexual" and to check other males is not considered appropriate.Only when we live in a sexual democracy can men and women look at each other.Eros has not been liberated.

Don't forget, with all of the movements that women have made, this is still a man's world. Therefore, in a patriarchal society that is viewed from a straight man's lens, perspective will usually be brought forth in such a way. Plus, there is a much great stigma and homophobia upon guys than women, because of standards of what is masculine or not. There are lot of dumb dudes who think it's gay to look at another dude or admit he is good looking. They act like they are super straight, because of this. When in reality, it is the straight dudes that can admit a dude is good looking every once and a while and doesn't get all goofy is the one who is truly straight and comfortabl with his sexuality and knows his orientations.
This may not be true, but they say a lot of dudes who are homophobic are actually covering up some "feelings". I don't know if check out dudes is the word I would use. But, I will look at dudes from time to time. But, it's more in a way of like sizing up the dude. I think women do this a lot with each other.Like when a hot girl is walking with a goofy looking dude, I can't help, but to think that I would have a pretty good chance with her seeing the guy she is with and comparing myself to him. It's not good to think this way, but I'm sure more guys do this than they will admit. I know women care more about the inside than the outside and that beauty in the inside can outshine the exterior, or it could be because of money as well.
But I would feel that I have the personality part down, so the physical comparison sometimes happen. Just with this same example, I could check a dude the girl is with, and see that he is more up to her par, because of his looks, and is close to as good looking as I am or better looking. So It's usually sizing up, or analyzing a dude's physical features. And when it's not that, I can plainly just admit if dude is handsome, or has a good physique, and thinking how I wouldn't mind having such a cut physique like that guys.Because otherwise mine is pretty good.
Even though my intention is obviously towards women most of the time, I can give props to a dude and admit he is good looking in my head (wouldn't say it out loud, especially if I don't know the dude). But, this isn't a problem with my some of my friends who are good looking who are confident within themselves. It's not something that gets talked about where we talk about each other's looks or care. But it could go in the context like "What do mean you can't get girls, you're a good looking guy, you just need to show some more confidence" or something like that.

because it's usually men in general who tend to openly critisize things they don't like. most men in the world are straight so they obviously like the idea of women checking out other women, but not the same with men. also men, usually straight, are very true to themselves having a masculine nature, so they tend to get embarassed or less proud when doing any "checking out" or sexual suggestions with the same sex.
