what are spherical bastards?

all I know is that it has something to do with astronomy

It's what Fritz Zwicky used to call other the astronomers at the Mount Wilson observatory. The idea was that they were bastards no matter which way you looked at them. Zwicky was born on Feb 14th 1898, so I guess he's topical at the moment.
