Just an observation, but if you need to ask, then you probably shouldn't be trying out for football.

the most important thing about tryouts is getting through the first day. just focus on 'surviving' and it will get easier. players and coaches are super-amped on the first day, so they're going to be looking to blow off steam and the guy who uses the term, 'american football' is probably who their going to focus on. football is about toughness, so no matter how difficult the drills are or how 'in your face' the coaches get, stay mentally tough. don't quit. they'll respect you more and more each day. as far as fundamentals, an textbook won't cover it, but grab a book at your local library to get an idea of the drills you'll be asked to do. the best advice I can give you is to get in shape. run 10X100 yrd sprints every day and do as many pushups as you can (sets of 50 will do). some guys may be better than you, but you can be there LONGER!! good luck.

You are going to run alot so you will get into much better shape.
You are going to position drills for each position
You are going to tackle which is going to be very hard if you are a noob
You are going to want to quit after the 1st 2 days of it
The most important thing is if you can catch, tackle, or have speed, you have a pretty good chance of making the team.

You might want to reconsider this if you haven't played any ball yet. Do you have some sort of playground experience? 2 hand touch? kill the man? flag? Well be prepared to run until you puke. Lift weights until just lifting your limbs is a chore of its own. If you playing defense..put a hat of someone and make him cough snot bubbles. If you play offense..tuck the ball and run scared and don't look back. But from the sound of this question...you might want to do alot of squats to keep the bench from flying away.

Please look at this site for any questions regarding High School Football. I hope you do go out for Football. When I joined Football, it changed my life. It made me tougher, get into fitness; and most importantly I became a leader.

If you're about to try out for it, it's time to quit calling it "American" football like you're some kind of European Nazi.

Just think about what position you are going to play and try to get ready for it by training

Be ready to have your body pushed to the limit. Dont expect the coaches to take you to the side and explain what you are doing wrong, just be able to adapt and work your *** off.

You need to know that you're going to get hurt, but you'll get hurt much worse if you insist on calling it american football.
