I would just like to inform iamagoda... about something. The ukulele has been played by the indiginous people of Hawaii for several centuries. calling an instrument with a history as rich as the ukulele a "Novelty instrument" is redicoulous.

Well, your name is not Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole, so the uke is out.
The harmonica is fine if you find yourself inprisoned alot.
But, if you are like most, The guitar is more likely to be useful...especially with the ladies. But if you really want to be a musician, you have a better chance if you learn to be a drummer. Join marching band.

I play guitar and ukulele, and I am just crazy about my ukulele! It's light and portable, easy to play, and you can accompany yourself (which you can't do with a harmonica). The ukulele is a fun instrument -- everyone smiles and laughs when you play it. You can get a cheap soprano uke for about $15, and a decent uke for $125. It's cheap enough that I don't worry about toting it along on a picnic or trip to the beach. Get a ukulele! You won't be disappointed!

Guitar, because ukelele is a ridiculous novelty instrument, and harmonica is something you can pick up in a week. Guitar is the best balance of useful and challenging.

To clarify, I have a banjo and a ukelele, and the ukelele makes the banjo seem mainstream. Noone plays just a ukelele outside of Hawaii. It just isn't a serious instrument, it's something you play with when you are tired of your real one.
