There is really no difference between the major parties except that they work to earn the votes of people from different walks of life. Democrats try to appeal to the poor and needy, which is why they seem to gain control when the economy goes bad. Republicans are split into two categories: The first emphasize morals to gain the votes of religious people, the other caters to the well-off (which is a contradiction when you think about it because a lot of well-off people gain their status through immoral practices). Democrats try to focus on national affairs while Republicans extremely focus in every other country's business. As for their differences in governing techniques, there really isn't any. Democrats are towards gay marriage, pro abortion, higher taxes, towards gun control, and government oriented market. The Republicans are anti-abortion, anti-gay, lower taxes, smaller government, less government influence in daily life, free market. Democrats take money from lobbyists who support ideas from one end of the spectrum and Republicans take money from lobbyists from the other end. The truth of American politics can be called 'The Golden Rule'; he who has the gold makes the rules.

There is really no difference in the two political parties that control things today. They both spew their beliefs on the general public in the hopes that they will get elected to office. The getting elected to office is the primary key here...that is what politicians are really concerened about. They will sell you their soul in exchange for a vote for them. It's pretty pathetic when you think about it.
