It sounds like you have a heavy task going on in the background that is constintly updating or going out and checking for resources, hit control - alt - delete for task manager and check out the processes tab and the CPU usage to see if any of those are doing it. I would check immediatly after boot when you say all is good and again after things start to get sluggish.
also depending on your virus program it could slow down a bit another easy alternative is to do a system restore to a date before your system started to slow or try to remember everything you installed right before you noticed the slow down.
Another alternative is to get a program such as a startup manager (they have free ones at download.com) to see what programs are set to start when windows start also this tool could be used to do some trial and error testing.
also check your schedualed tasks by going to your control panel
and clicking on the task schedualer and seeing if you have anything checking for updates or doing any synchinizing.
also windows update sometimes can slow a system down a bit.
This is not a complete list of things to check but it is a start.

do you mantain your pc like you would a car? i suspect not.
Do a few simple things , go to system tools free up some space, do a defrag(takes a while) also some free spware progs arent all they seem. I would only use spybot s&d , or avg. Do you have nortons anti virus , that is a cpu hogger. Get rid of anything on your pc you havent used in the last 3 mths add/remove in control panel to do this. There is so much to do so little time, let us know if things improve with the advice you get off here
Good luck

Maybe you have too much program running in background; this will only reasonable when you had little RAM left.- kicked out.
Maybe there is virus? You had a good antivirus. - kicked out.
There might be problem when your computer is running in hot place. Maybe the RAM itself s so hot because you had not enough fan? Or the surrounding was already in high temperature? this is what you have to consider. If you're running a computer in long time, you should put maximum fan possible and if you really care, go and find the bar for heat remover for RAM at any computer shop.

The last one on the list is my favorite cleans all the junk files and a whole lot more .This and yahoo security suit are all I use to keep my pc happy.

Sounds like you have spyware on your computer. Run a good spyware eliminator program such as ad-ware SE personal which is free (google it). Chances are it will clear it right up. Needs to be run once a week or so if you do a lot of downloading.

Go to Toolbar, select "Delete Browsing History" select "Delete All" - that clears cookies, history, passwords - absolutely everything. You can select what you want to delete from this list if you don't want to delete it all.
