Crete of course. Because Crete is an island whose visitors will experience nature in all its glory and will encounter breathtaking sights.

Endless stretches of seashore bordered in frothy lace, inlets and islands of exotic beauty and sandy beaches tucked away at the foot of forbidding mountains. Impenetrable but yet such majestic gorges, holy caves, blessed rivers and lush, green plains thickly covered with olive and citrus trees. It is a self-sufficient land in every way that is rich in endemic and rare flora and fauna.

You must visit the ancient ruins which are all over the place. You must visit both mainland and the islands which are all over the place. And you must make time for the nightlife which is all over the place. And you must take time to visit the beaches which are, well you get the picture. You will love Greece. And oh by the way, be prepared to eat lots of fresh salad.. Greeks eat a cuke and tom salad with bread at almost every meal. Its delicious and satisfying not to mention healthy.
It has a pleasant warm character which is why after having visited all the main spots in Europe such as Paris, London, Rome, Scandia, Berlin, Madrid, Lisbon, etc etc, people still keep coming back to Greece as if they were going home.
English is continually on the rise and most places have all the modern conveniences. I have spent much time there and will continue to do so. When you just want to hang out, Greece is the best place to do it. The country is very tourist friendly and much of the population is extremely well educated. Crime is rare.

Greece has 3000 islands.Hundreds of them are inhabited and touristic. It depends on what kind of vacations you want.My opinion is to avoid the croweded islands such as Mykonos in order to enjoy the sun unperturbed. All the Ionian Islands(Kerkyra , Leykada , Ithaki , Kefallonia etc ) and Sporades (Skiathos, Allonesos and Skopelos)are quite green unlike Kyklades (Mykonos,Santorini , Naxos,Delos etc )but they all are very beautiful and with some extraordinary beaches.Samothraki and Thasos up North are very beautiful too and more "family type" islands and also Chios , Mytilini , Hydra , Milos , Sifnos , and many many more big or small waiting to be explored.Don't forget that the thousants of miles of sea cover the mainland also. You will find very beautiful beaches and nice people at Chalkidiki, Kavala ,Preveza ,Pieria ,Pyrgos and in other places in mainland also.
Try http://menoumellada.ert.gr/en/ .You will find videos and photos from everywhere in Greece.
You will love it.I wish you 'll have agreat time!!

The best islands must be Crete (big, different, with lots of things to see and do), Santorini, Rhodes and Corfu - I'm giving you islands which are all different, so that you won't only see the stereotypical Aegean island. Then, there are literally hundreds of islands, some well known, some not so much, and they're all interesting in their own particular way. Hope you have a nice vacation!

Don't listen to that guy that just sayed that thing Italy vs Greece. Go to Greece. Athens is ok for a couple of days but it gets old fast and the roaming dogs in the street will get on your nerves. Go to Lesvos. It is pretty far out there but the towns are cool. Its got a very mixed feel because it is so close to Turkey. An you can take day trips to Turkey for like 25 Euro round trip. I had a lot of fun there. Plus Greek food beats the hell out of Italian food.

How about visiting the mainland - its unbelievably historic.

Try Delphi (where the Oracle was), Metoera (where the monasteries are on top of rocky columns - was even used in a bond film), Monodendri with the amazing Vikos gorge, Olypia where the original games were, Myceneae the ruins of the oldest known city on Earth, Naphlion a charming Victorian Greek seaside town, Epidauros the most amazing preserved amphitheatre and of course Athens.

Santorini for nice view on the sunsets and uphill ride with donkeys.

If you go to JUST ONE ISLAND, it MUST be Santorini!!! It is the epitome of all Greek Islands! It's very beautiful and has varied landscape....it's where you will get those awesome views of the whitewashed houses and blue domed monastaries overlooking the sea. Simply gorgeous!!! Other Islands I liked were Rhodes and Simi. But don't miss out on Santorini whatever you do!
