Yes it works. As long as you know the 25 digit Product key then It will work. Go look on top of your computers tower and you should see the sticker. Copy down that 25 digit product key and then go to this link and follow these steps @ the link below http://www.windowsxpprofessional.windowsreinstall.com/installxpcdoldhdd/indexfullpage.htm
It will no ask for the product key. But when you go to activate it you MUST click change product key and then enter the product key on your dell computers sticker located on top of the tower.

It is unlikely, as the CD key may be registered for Dell OEM installations. If you can get it to install on another computer, you will still have to enter an activation code within 30 days or the system will not come up. The code would have been used already for the installation on the computer you have. This is the Microsoft FAQ on the activiation code details.

From the sounds of it, you have a useable version of XP. You will still need an XP key, which should be on the Authentication sticker on the side or back of the computer box.
There are many versions, so not all keys will work with all versions...for example version sp1 has a predefined group of keys and version sp2 has its own predefined set of keys. They are not interchangable.
Once you start the install, you have to finish it, or you will be stuck in a partial install boot up situation....ugly.
Keep in mind, if you cannot validate your key, (one registration per mac address) then you cannot get your updates.
Good Luck

If you require an operating system install UBUNTU. It's free, reliable and up to date. Plus you will get all of the software FREE!!!
If the computer has 256MB of RAM get a full version. If less, get XUBUNTU
