1. Take careful notes in class. Especially notice what questions the teacher asks during class. Those questions are mostly likely to be on the test.
2. Go over your notes as soon after class as you can manage. The sooner you look over your notes and add in any little missing bits, the more you will understand and remember the material.
3. Go over you notes again the next morning. Repetition is important. Studies have shown that looking through your notes several times before the next class is a good way to plant the ideas in your head.
4. Ask questions about anything you don't understand.
5. Look at your teacher when he/she is talking. You'll be surprised how that will encourage your teacher to be sure that you (personally - you) understand the concepts.
6. Get extra help from your teacher if you are still having trouble. Make an appointment to meet with the teacher before school, after school, or whenever it will be convenient for both of you.
7. Explain the lessons to someone else. That's the very best way to learn the material.

Make a positive mindset and tell yourself "My mind is like a sponge. I will absorb all of this material effortlessly." If you are not allowed to mark up your textbook, make a lot of notes as you read your homework assignments. Several days before the exam, go over your notes and underline important stuff that you might forget with a highlighter. Write it all down again on a separate paper. Then review again before your exam. If you are a verbally oriented person, do this with a study buddy who has also made notes, and test each other by asking questions. Are you talking about a geology or a biology course? Or perhaps the evolution of the cell? G to Wikipedia for clarification of concepts that you find difficult to master or ask people here.

Read the material until you understand it. Get supplemental material if you don't. Experiment when you can, and I found the "biology coloring book" helpful for some complicated concepts.

Make flashcards to help you remember terms and vocab, and study examples of certain types of evolution, because they always have examples on tests!
