that there can be a "black history month," with media coverage and performances, demonstrations, speeches etc etc, but if we tried to have a "white history month," we would be called racist?

Because that's all you mostly learn about in history, is white people. All of the presidents, most of the war heroes, etc, are all assumed white unless proven otherwise. You'd hardly know that Black people made any contribution at all, to listen to your regular history lessons. "Black History Month" is an attempt to correct this.
As a kid with Native American (or Indian, if you prefer) hertiage, I used to squirm thru history class, knowing that half the story was never told. So it's good that they're making this effort, at least, to balance out the story.

My guess is we don't actually teach "Black History" in the school system. So this is an opportunity for them to "brag". I actually did a little exploration on some of the ideas from black inventors. Did you know the device that couples train cars together was invented by a black man? I am a white man and I am sick and tired of being blamed for slavery! My grandparents came here from Ireland after they were freed! I just can't understand why a black man that speaks up is called an activist but a white man that speaks up is called a racist! They have invented many things we probably take for granted. They just have to learn to present their ideas better. They should remember it was whites that helped them to gain their freedom!

we already do have white history celebrations. check out your local calender and see just how many days are considered holidays that have to do with white people and culture. thanksgiving alone should count for something. we celebrate the annhilation and halocaust of a whole race of people. think native americans enjoy columbus day?

or how about president's day? last i checked, they were all white.

it's time to grow up and deal with the fact that african americans deserve a month long celebration of their culture and their people. our history books in school do a pretty fair job of keeping their accomplishments to a minimum.

we don't need a white history month. we have a white history world.
