I just saw a comment someone made that read-

"There is no such thing as global warming. Haven't you heard of the citrus feeze in CA?"

Lot's of people seem to disagree on the source of global warming, But would somebody like to explain the effects of global warming? What type of climate changes can be expected as it progresses?

Not to turn this into a religious debate but this person's avatar name just happens to start with jesusfreak....

Don't knock the weather. If it didn't change once in a while, nine out of ten liberals couldn't start a conversation.

Global warming is a bad term to describe a phenomenon that is indeed happening. In the scientific community, it is now thought of as "Climate Change." The earth does go through many stages in which the climate has changed in the past, however, these changes have not been as drastic as we are currently seeing.
One reason "global warming" is a bad term is because many areas will enter an ice age if the warming trend continues as it is. The higher the sea-level, the more you disrupt the Gulf Stream (what brings warm air from the tropics to England and Ireland). If that is disrupted, Western Europe will be in an ice age.
Sea-level rise is a major issue, but not because of the melting of glaciers. Water is an interesting liquid because it expands when it is heated. More coastal inhabitants should be concerned because the sea is warming so much it is expanding to larger that the current land mass of the continents.

Regardless of the cause, the fact of climate change is indisputable. It is very easy to measure frome the records of even the last 100 years.

Predicting what it will lead to is harder, because it disrupts climate systems. For instance, the only reason that areas outside the tropics do not deep freeze in winter is that heat is transferred from the tropics by air and water streams. These have stopped many times in the geological past, and if they stpped again as a result of warming then permanent ice would extend well south of New York.

What is certain is that sea levels will rise - they already are doing, quite quickly. This will be bad for people who live near the sea, and unfortunately this is around 80% of Earth's population.

We should actually hope that we are the cause, because then we may be able to do something about it. If we cannot, you can kiss the economy and maybe even civilization goodbye in about 50 years.

Sorry I think global warming is just the earth changing thru the years I do not think that we (people) caused the majority of it. I am going thru the coldest winter that we have had in the midwest in a very long time. So sorry I do not buy into the people being the cause of global warming. The earth goes thru phases, look at the ice age, I don't think people caused that.

Global warming does not mean just warming. It also means that the earth is trying to cleanse itself of all the toxins man has inflicted on Her. One way she does this is to cause major weather pattern changes and bring about an Ice Age. These major changes in weather are brought about by polar ice caps melting - thus, global warming. The shifts in weather patterns are a major clue that we are all in for a HUGE change in a short time. I believe it is already too late and we should prepare for the worst. Mother Earth will cleanse herself, even if she has to freeze out all living things to do it.
Get the movie "An Inconvenient Truth." This movie will explain it better than I could. It is based on scientific evidence. Just because Gore helps to promote the movie and narrates it does not mean it is not scientific.

Global warming doesn't exist the earth is in a cycle. Don't believe me back in 1975 scientists were concerned about global cooling proof of that is here http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15391426/site/newsweek/

the world is full of ostriches and many people believe only what they see in their own back yard, they do not take the trouble to be interested or concerned what is going on on the resr of the planet or learn from other peoples mistakes
here are somer details and some solutions and a source to check up on
and all of it is true, but it is not happening in the USA

many factors are a result of human intervention

in North Africa,India,Mexico ,millions of people are effected by land loss and desertification

in recent times thousands of people have died because of exessive heat, usually old people.in India ,Mexico and France,
deforestation causing desertification, the desert conditions causing very cold nights and scorching hot days

in china, thousands of what used to be farmers are running for their lives from the dust storms that have burried their towns and turned their lands into dessert, the globe where they were got to hot for them .
and instead of producing food they are now needing it from some where else, and they will drastically effect the world food prices when they start buying water in the form of grains ,at any cost destabalising governments, in some countries ,could be the result
(are you seeing more Chinese around interested in agricultural lands ,we do here in Mexico)

,the Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year
and all of the desserts we know are a results of mans actions ,and they are increasing ,not getting less ,in the dinosaurs days ,there were no desserts.

collectively this planet is drying up because of bad farming practices like, over grazing and fertilizers,

as far as the food production is concerned, Global warming or some of its effects are serious, rising seas result in landloss

each degree rise in temperature means 10%crop loss

more landloss because of desertification every year,we have less areble land to produce food ,for an extra 70 million people ,

and there is less and less water (because of deforestation),to irrigate this production ,
and there are less and less farmers to do it..
who are overpumping deep carbon aquifiers
who are plowing more and more unstable lands because they have lost so many million hectares to desertification ,
because of bad farming practises ,such as using fertilizers and heavy machinary or over grazing

RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
this does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.but the melting ice from Green land and the south pole ,are another matter.

Global warming is in theory reversable, but it will mean global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,

At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.

SOLUTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to reverse the destructive processes

reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.

the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.

the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia

Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.

the protection of existing forrests.

stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.

education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.

education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion

Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.

more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks

,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour

alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine

recicling wastes,limit water use
